    Yuletide Season

    It is an established fact that Spain rule the Philippines which lasted for over 300 years and due to the long association with Spaniards, Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian; and a common trait that distinguishes them aside from they're being warm and friendly people, is Filipino hospitality. Generosity is also part of our culture.

    A stranger passing Filipinos who are eating will automatically be invited to "come and eat." It's polite to say you've already eaten. If people insist, or if there's an abundance of food during the holiday season, wedding or fiesta, then by all means participate. Don't accept the first invitation. It's better to point out how inconvenient it would be for the host, or to make a polite excuse, then wait to see if you're pressed further. It's the Filipino way, enabling the visitor to gauge whether an invitation is genuine or not.

    When visiting a home, you'll be offered food and drink. It's polite to wait to be urged to sit at the table or begin eating. If you don't like the food, eat a little and make an excuse rather than reject it outright. Guests who leave a little food on the plate indicate they're satisfied.

    Filipinos have a particular love for salty made of tiny shrimps called "bagoong", especially so when it is paired with a piece of fresh green mango, (now, my mouth is watering) I can finish one (1) kilo of it. I have many friends, balik-bayans (former Filipino became Americans), who wouldn't like to eat bagoong and told me that they absolutely dislike it because of its unfavorable odor hence, it is thrown away in the airport.

    A common indoctrination into the culture, is usually to eat the incubated duck egg called, "balut". By making you to eat the balut, it will works just like VIAGRA, as long as it is mixed with beers. Imagine, you can save a lot because balut here is cheap rather than buying the real viagra and you can avoid the risk of fake viagra as many is circulating in the market.

    There is also a fish of a pungent odor called "daing", which have different styles like that of dried one and the other form was preserved in vinegar, salt and garlic. Some people considered it  smelly fish, because when you smell it, you feel like dizzy but for some others who are familiar with daing, it goes well with fresh tomatoes.

    It is not necessary to pretend to like these foods, it is enough to be familiar with them and in true Filipino fashion, smile gently when declining.

    The beauty in our culture is manifested in our face despite hardship in life we remain happy so long as families are living together sharing love at home and due to the fact that we have positive ethical values deep-rooted in our traditions and family life, as is a deep trust in the creator above.

                         MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Papaya

    Fruits and vegetables are the original fast foods and many are ready-to-eat. They are safe foods to persons who are high blood, diabetics, etc., especially so during the holiday season. There are numerous fruits which are often cheaper than high-priced convenience foods. I will concentrate on Papaya. Here are some its myths and facts -

    Papaya is thought to be indigenous to the West Indies and northern South America was carried by the Spanish to Manila in mid 1500's. From there, it went to Malacca then India and reached Hawaii.

    It is alleged that papaya lessens the libido (sex urge) of a person that's why many priest eat them lots;

    It is a constipation relief;

    Good for your skin; and

    Eating papaya everyday can help your breast grows bigger?

    I think papaya is a healthy fruit more so the papaya milk.
